Auto & General Theatre on the Square suspends productions

SANDTON – The popular Auto & General Theatre on the Square has postponed some of their shows.

Popular gathering spot, the Auto & General Theatre on the Square is taking some necessary precautions amid the coronavirus outbreak.

They have temporarily suspended some of their current productions. In a statement issued by the theatre from executive producer Daphne Kuhn and media liaison Mika Stefano, the suspensions come in light of government’s response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) and its effective measures.

They said that the Auto & General Theatre on the Square will reschedule all productions until after the Easter weekend or till further notice. The comedy shows postponed will be Artificially Inseminated with Claudine Ullman, Sober Sex with Ntosh Madlingozi and Problem Child with Loyiso Madinga.

They added that following the ban on gatherings of 100 or more people, the theatre has chosen to continue to host small, weekly afternoon music concerts and rehearsals. Ticket sales for concerts will be limited to 60 selected and spaced seats per show in its 200-seater Sandton venue.

“While the health of everyone is paramount, we cannot allow the total collapse of the entertainment industry which will be hardest hit,” said executive producer Daphne Kuhn.

The theatre has recognised the pleas of musicians and artists for work as well as commitments to actors, directors, designers, playwrights, musicians, technicians and its resident staff who are most reliant on their income.

Keeping spirits high, the theatre prides itself on being a home for many artists, storytellers and musicians by continuously fuelling the industry.

They have, however, taken matters very seriously and will go the extra mile to ensure that the venue will be safe, hygienic and as welcoming as ever.

In spite of the challenges, audiences can still look forward to an exciting and positive year ahead with new local and international plays and new works by Mike van Graan and Paul Slabolepszy.
