Public invited to watch Kids Haven’s production of Skrop’Laap

SANDTON – Proceeds from the play will go to the drama programme at Kids Haven.

Bryanston-based Kids Haven is delighted to present their home-grown production of Skrop’Laap at the Theatre on the Square in Sandton on 29 March at 4pm.

Kids Haven was founded in 1992 in response to increasing numbers of children on the streets, providing vulnerable children with care and protection to support meaningful inclusion in society.

The 45-minute play is written by Tsietsi Morobi, who lived at Kids Haven while he studied drama at Wits University. It is based on his knowledge of children’s lives on the streets.

The play Skrop’Laap deals with homelessness and displacement as seen through the eyes of characters Magents and Pops. The two friends find themselves relegated to the hard concrete and forced to fend for themselves in ways unimaginable. They keep their hope for a better future alive by telling stories of how they see the future.

The play further interrogates the idea of being an outcast in society and the notion of being looked at. It further explores themes of sexuality, friendship, loss and tries to break down stereotypes and society’s perception of homeless children.

Community members are invited to support this production, where proceeds will go to Morobi’s drama programme which takes place weekly at Kids Haven.

Morobi said, “I’ve been working on this story with kids from Kids Haven Drama Group and it’s been a journey and a half.

“This is a step for them into the professional world of acting and they are excited to share this journey and narrative with the public. They are ready to share their talents with the world and show how, when supported, children can achieve anything they put their minds on.

“This play has so many voices of hopeless kids and needs to be told in an attempt to bring back hope to our youth, especially those living on the street. It gives them a voice and reaffirms that they too are human. Your support is valued and appreciated.”
