To kick off the new year, we have some riveting movies lined up for you in cinemas from 17 January.
Get immersed in a world of fantasy and adventure as Dr John Dolittle and his furry friends team-up to save The Queen! Living in solitude behind the high walls of his lush manor in 19th-century England, Dr Dolittle’s only companionship comes from various exotic animals that he speaks to daily. When a young Queen Victoria falls ill, the eccentric doctor and his furry friends embark on an epic journey to a mythical island to find the cure. Dolittle stars Robert Downey Jr as well as voice talents from Emma Thompson, Rami Malek, John Cena and more.
If you had the chance to change fate’s course – all in the name of saving the lives of those close to you – would you take it? 1917 follows two young British soldiers during the First World War as they embark on an impossible mission. In the war drama starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Richard Madden, the soldiers are charged with delivering a message, deep in enemy territory, that will stop their own men from walking into a deadly trap.
Kick off your cinema-going year with a little fright! In The Grudge, a house is cursed by a vengeful ghost after a young mother murders her family. A single mother and detective tries to solve the case only to find that the vengeful ghost dooms those who enter the house with a violent death. The supernatural horror film written and directed by Nicolas Pesce stars Andrea Riseborough, John Cho and Lin Shaye who deliver riveting performances.
A film portraying French diversity and divisions ruled by geographical and racial barriers, Les Miserables follows Stéphane who recently joined the Anti-Crime Squad in Montfermeil, in the suburbs of Paris, France, where, Victor Hugo set his famed novel Les Miserables. Alongside his new colleagues Chris and Gwada – both experienced members of the team – he quickly discovers tensions running high between local gangs. When the trio finds themselves overrun during the course of an arrest, a drone captures the encounter, threatening to expose the reality of everyday life. Inspired by the 2005 Paris riots, and Ladj Ly’s short film of the same name, the film stars Damien Bonnard, Alexis Manenti and Djebril Zonga and is a provocative insight into the tensions between neighbourhood residents and police.
