Taking his rightful place

Fresh off winning Sportscene’s and Puma’s Put Me On competition, Lucasraps may seem like an overnight success, but the young rapper has been in the music industry for quite some time paying his dues and releasing music.

The competition saw Sportscene and Puma search for South Africa’s next biggest hip-hop act. In a star-studded launch of the brand-new flagship Sportscene store in Sandton City, Lucasraps was announced as the winner of the competition. His fast-paced lyrical skill saw him come out victorious against thousands of competitors to claim the top prize.

His win will see him receive the ultimate boost to his musical career, a boost that includes a song produced by Gemini Major and a music video by Nate Thomas who has directed for industry giants such as AKA, Cassper Nyovest and Shekinah.

“When they announced me as the winner I felt shocked at first because the competition that was within the competition was an actual competition – there were very talented cats out there and everyone had a good chance of winning. So, when I won I actually felt shook and relieved in a sense,” Lucasraps said.

Having started his rap career at eight years old, Lucasraps has honed his craft and fashioned himself into a deadly wordsmith who can go bar for bar with any rapper – seasoned or rookie. Although slowly gaining the right momentum for his career, he is no stranger to working with notable industry giants and music legends. He previously caught the eye of music maestro, DJ Maphorisa, and together they were able to establish a powerful following for the young artist.

Now it’s unquestionably the right time for Lucasraps to take his rightful place among the best in the industry. “Now, I feel everything is more official because of my age, level of maturity and now I feel like it’s better to come in. I’ve made the noise and making noise means people seeing your moves, hearing your tracks and people seeing that you’re trying to do something.

I’ve been doing that for the longest time and now I feel like winning this made so much noise for me.” Lucasraps’ youthful wisdom, authenticity and vigour are tell-tales of the guidance he has received from legends in the industry – setting him apart from other rappers.

The Cape Town-born artist travelled all over the country honing his craft before finally settling in Sandton’s greener pastures. “I always just learn and that’s the best thing you can do,” said Lucasraps. The young rapper promises to make his mark in the industry and said he was channeling all his energies to adding a refreshing and much-needed break from the monotony that has come to define a lot of new wave rappers. “The timing right now, I feel like it’s perfect. Every time I think of something I just think of authenticity and how much I can make it mine.”
