Local playwright makes dreams a reality

SANDTON – Michael Potter's first play, Looking for Audrey, will be at the Pop Art Theatre at the beginning of October.

A local Sandton resident has pursued his dreams of becoming a playwright and will be releasing his first play at the beginning of October.

Michael Potter, a 27-year-old Morningside resident, qualified as an attorney in August last year. However, while doing his articles, he honed his interests as a freelance playwright part-time and decided to pursue this passion instead. Potter performed in plays and movies.

“I knew however that my true vocation lay in the creation of content and in April this year I endeavoured to write and produce my first play and here I am, still astounded that it’s all going to happen,” said Potter.

From a young age, Potter was passionate about writing and would create his own comic books and stories. However, he had never considered writing as a career path and pursued a career in law instead. “However, spending time on film sets and in theatres in different capacities, either as a writer, cameraman or even the guy getting everyone’s coffee, I fell in love with the process of storytelling.”

Now that Potter has decided to pursue his dream of being a playwright, he feels more confident, self-assured and motivated to achieve his goals. “I am less shaken by the bad days, and they do come often, knowing that I am pursuing my truest goal and that the challenges are just part of the process.”

Potter’s first play, Looking for Audrey, is a three-act play about Mark, a 20-something who seems to be in a perpetual string of short-lived relationships that end in disaster. Rather than waiting to fall in love, Mark decides to create a test to determine if someone is compatible with him based on how they measure up to his favourite actress Audrey Hepburn.

“It’s without a doubt the most challenging and fulfilling thing I have ever done with my life up to this point. The play was written in one sitting with editing continuing for months thereafter.”

He concluded that there have been so many incredible people along the way who have contributed to making the play come to reality.

The play is set for 3 and 5 October at the POP Art Theatre. Tickets are available from www.popartcentre.co.za
