Volkswagen fight against hunger

Volkswagen Group South Africa employees spent a weekend combatting hunger with Rise Against Hunger.

As part of the Volkswagen Group South Africa’s annual Show of Hands initiative, 125 volunteers made up of employees and their families came together with Rise Against Hunger in Gauteng to pack meals for the needy children. Aiming to provide and improve the nutrition levels of children at the mercy of a 153 Early Childhood Development centres, the Volkswagen Group South Africa team and Rise Against Hunger managed to pack 40 000 meals over the weekend.

The meals packed by the 125 volunteers will be able to provide the children with five meals a week for an entire year. The actions from the Show of Hands and Rise Against Hunger initiative will benefit Ntataise which is a non-profit profit organisation focussed on increasing the access and quality of ECD education for children from disadvantaged communities across South Africa.

“With 1,7 million households in South Africa facing hunger, the reality is that many children have to go to school hungry, this impacts on their education and their wellbeing. It is inspiring to see how many of our employees were willing to give their time in order to make a difference. I believe the work that was done over this past weekend will have a significant impact on these children’s lives,” Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director of Volkswagen Group South Africa.
