What we’re reading and watching this month

Fancy staying on the couch? Our recommendations for this month to keep you company.

We’re reading…

The Game Ranger, the Knife, the Lion and the Sheep – 20 tales about Curious Characters from Southern Africa is a collection of stores about the lesser-known characters from our country. People like Mevrou Maria Mouton, who prefers to socialise with the slaves on her Swartland farm, and with them conspires to murder him. And Coenraad De Byus, a man who marries many woman, all African, and fathers a small nation. A hugely entertaining read (but we’d buy it for the title alone!). Jacana, R260.

François Levaillant was the first, and greatest, South African birder. He was also an explorer, naturalist, zoological collector and anthropologist of the Cape … his contribution to ornithology in Africa is said to be immeasurable, with some of his specimens still existing in museums in Europe. For more than a quarter of a century, Ian Glenn searched for his notebooks and the fate of his collection, digging into the mysteries of Levaillant’s life and times. The First Safari – Searching for François Levaillant is an exceptional book for lovers of natural history, to researchers, to those interested in the bush or birding. Jacana, R260.

We’re watching…

This month we’re going to be visiting Cinema Nouveau on a regular basis because of the host of oh-so-fab new releases. The Favourite is one of those must-watch films. Set in the early 18th century, England and France are at war and Queen Anne has fallen ill. Regardless, duck racing and pineapple eating retain their popularity. While looking after the ill Queen, her close friend Lady Sarah governs the country and takes a liking to their new servant, Abigail, because of her charm and sense of humour. Magnificent cinematography, twisted humour, multiple-award wins and a fantastic cast make this movie a wonderful must-watch. Starring Emma Stone, Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Nicholas Hoult. In cinemas now.
