Bryanston Organic Market celebrates conscious living

BRYANSTON – The Textile Stallholder Forum will host an exhibition celebrating South African heritage and sustainable products.

The Textile Stallholder Forum of the Bryanston Organic and Natural Market will be hosting an exhibition, Conscious Living, to celebrate South African heritage during Nelson Mandela’s centenary.

The exhibition will take place in the auditorium of the Michael Mount Waldorf School from 30 August to 1 September. The market is situated on the school’s grounds. The opening of the exhibition will be hosted on 30 August from 5pm to 7pm.

The exhibition showcases all aspects of textiles including clothing, accessories, décor and homeware, fibre art and craft and Persian carpets. Exhibits feature the creative process from raw materials and design through to the completed product. Exhibitors will be in attendance to demonstrate and discuss the features of their work and share their choices and processes. A beautiful range of products will be available for purchase and custom-made orders are also welcomed.

The members of the Textile Stallholder Forum contribute to conscious living through the choices they make in creating their product range. They strive to use sustainable and natural raw materials and have an understanding of the textile lifecycle, from creation to disposal and its effects on the soil, plants, animals, humans and the planet.

They source their materials from reliable suppliers who are able to inform them of the origins of the materials and their production methods. In the making of their products, they support small local businesses wherever possible in order to create jobs, skills development and social upliftment. They choose the best possible alternatives at all times and are open and transparent with their customers. Members of the forum meet regularly to share knowledge and undertake research projects that benefit the group and create awareness of developments in the field of sustainable textiles.

Messaynesh Gebresilassie is the founder of Messay Cotton and Leather and will be displaying some of her work at the exhibition. “I am passionate about my business and the products that I sell because I am doing something that I love. It makes me happy to be able to promote my culture and support the weavers in Ethiopia and other small businesses.”
