Theatre performance to raise money for teenager with debilitating condition

SANDTON – Silver Linings Songook will feature various South African entertainers who have given their time to raise money for medical costs.

The theatre community has rallied together to help raise money for a teenager suffering from a debilitating disease.

Silver Linings Songbook will feature a variety of South African performers who have given their time to help raise money for a 16-year-old boy suffering from aggressive ulcerative colitis.

Ziya Devar suffers from the inflammatory bowel disease that causes long-lasting inflammation and ulcers in your digestive tract. There is no cure for the disease, only treatment to address the symptoms.

Ziya’s parents, Brenda Sakellarides and Nik Sakellarides have both been involved in the theatre community for many years and said in a Facebook post that they would try crowdfunding to raise money for Ziya’s treatment.

Owen Lonzar, a choreographer and director, heard about the family’s struggles and instead decided to produce a show with other big names in the industry in order to raise money for Ziya’s increasingly high medical costs.

“There are genuinely very few good people in the world who are always willing to help others but Brenda and Nik are always willing to help others. They are very special people, so I thought I need to do this. It is also great because the community is involved,” said Lonzar.

Lonzar added that it had not been very difficult to find people who wanted to get involved as both of the Sakellarides’ are so well respected in the community. In fact, Lonzar said there were actually too many people who wanted to get involved in the performance, which will include names such as Jonathan Roxmouth, Timothy Moloi, Angela Killian, Sylvaine Strike and many others. There will also be a special appearance by Ashleigh Harvey who plays Kate Monster in Avenue Q.

Performer Caitlin Clerk came on board to assist in the administrative detail to not only entertain audiences but to raise money for a good cause. Daphne Kuhn has also offered the use of the Auto and General Theatre on the Square, at Nelson Mandela Square.

The performance will take place at the theatre on 24 June at 6.30pm. Tickets will cost R200 each. Tickets can be purchased through Computicket.com
