Nan Hau Temple sees thousands of Joburgers descend for Chinese New Year

PARKMORE – Parkmore residents and many others made their homage to the Nan Hua Temple to celebrate Chinese New Year.

 

The true majesty of Chinese New Year was felt as thousands of spectators gathered at the Nan Hau Temple to pay homage to the festival.

Although based in Bronkhorstspruit, visitors come from all over Johannesburg to immerse themselves in Chinese culture. Du Mann Ying, spokesperson for the Nan Hua meditation centre in Parkmore, explained that it is the Year of the Dog, which in the Chinese Zodiac, represents loyalty.

On 18 February, friends and families were able to taste the ancient green tea, have wise words of wisdom explained to them by a Buddha and taste traditional Chinese, Cantonese and Taiwanese vegetarian cuisine.

Du Mann Ying said the celebration of the Chinese New Year is the perfect opportunity to learn more about Chinese culture. The light offering Dharma ceremony was enchanting as it welcomed in the Chinese New Year with spiritual exuberance and lots of loud crackers.

Multicultural performances from the Nan Hua Performing Arts Group, martial arts, Chinese yo-yo dancing, Indian dancing and Korean dancing expressed the need to experience all sorts of Chinese culture. Children and adults had great fun when they created their own Chinese zodiac paintings, handcrafts and Buddhism-related products.

The culture of a family legacy of loyalty and honour as explained by Ven. Master Hsing Yun’s greetings is important in life. “We must stay loyal in our relationships, responsibilities, friendships and towards our leaders,” said Yun.

The main temple was an incredible sight for visitors and the sheer volume of amazing architecture delighted the huge crowd.
