Probus welcomes public to Women’s Month talk
BRYANSTON – Parktown Probus, an organisation for retired and semi-retired professionals, welcomes interested people to a talk by Professor Richard Brooksbank titled 'The Story of Ma's Laces' at Bryanston Sports Club on 29 August.
Parktown Probus, an association for retired and semi-retired professionals, welcomes interested people to a Women’s Month talk by Professor Richard Brooksbank titled ‘The Story of Ma’s Laces’ at Bryanston Sports Club on 29 August.
Probus is an international association with clubs throughout the world where they stimulate thought, interest and participation in activities at a time of life when horizons are narrowing and the opportunity to make friends is limited.
The Parktown Probus group was formed by Parktown and Rosebank Rotary Clubs. According to club president Rodney Chalmers, the club forms part of the social arm of Rotary. They meet on the last Tuesday of every month for a lunch and discussion in Rivonia or Bryanston.
At this month’s meeting, Brooksbank will discuss how his great grandmother, Louise Lienaux-Vergauwe, came to create six unique and exquisite pieces of lacework that provided her with a vehicle to express her sadness, anger and national pride in the face of the German invasion and occupation of her small country, Belgium, during the Great War.
Chalmers said, “Probus Parktown welcomes new members. We are an organisation of both men and women and aim to cater to a range of interests in our choice of speakers.”
Some of the topics covered in the past range from ‘Caving and the Discovery of Homo Naledi’ to ‘Living with an active volcano in Montserrat’.
