EFF shouts ‘corruption’ in council

JOBURG – The City of Johannesburg Economic Freedom Fighters caucus accused African National Congress councillor of corruption in the 24 November council sitting.

African National Congress (ANC) councillor, Jabu Thomo was accused by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) on the 24 November council sitting of being involved in a business that allegedly is in conflict with his counsellor duties at the City of Johannesburg.

Thomo spoke in council about the Section 79 Environment and Infrastructure Services Department report, when he was interrupted by the EFF’s Musa Novela who raised a point of order.

Council speaker, Vasco Da Gama, told Times Live the EFF believed Thomo got contracts through the Jozi@Work programme.

Da Gama instructed Thomo to continue and said the matter is being investigated by the ethics and integrity commissioner. “But until the investigation is finalised, councillor Thomo has the right of every other councillor,” he told the other City councillors.

Thomo said that he would withhold his comments until the matter is finalised with the commission.

This council meeting, where department’s quarterly reports were tabled, saw very few disruptions. This was unlike the previous sitting when members of the ANC allegedly disrupted proceedings.

A group of protesters were, however, gathered outside the Metro Centre in Braamfontein, but no one accessed the council chamber. For a short while, the building was under lockdown, not allowing any people to leave.
