Co-worker arrested for rape

JOBURG – Females urged to be vigilant and never leave their drinks unattended.

Johannesburg Central Police recently arrested a 30-year old male for rape at the corner of De Villiers and Loveday streets. According to police spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele, it is alleged that the suspect raped a 25-year-old female at his flat.
It is reported that the victim and the suspect work for the same company and on the day that the rape occurred, they went to have drinks at a tavern after work.
The victim was shocked to wake up in her co-worker’s bed and revealed that the suspect had allegedly had sexual intercourse with her without her consent. Mbele mentioned the victim also suspects that she was drugged.
Mbele urged men to respect the rights of women. “If she says no, leave her. Forcing yourself onto her or having sexual intercourse without her consent is rape.”
He also urged women to be responsible when they go out. “Don’t leave your drinks with anyone if you go to the bathroom. Finish your drink before you go to the bathroom.”
In a separate incident, Johannesburg Central Police arrested two suspects between the age of 22 and 26 for an armed robbery at the corner of Noord and Koch streets on 9 November. Mbele explained that the suspects were captured by CCTV footage while allegedly robbing a 26-year-old male at the corner of Noord and Wanderers streets. “They threatened the victim with a knife and took his cellphone before they fled the scene,” Mbele said.
He highlighted that the swift response by police led to the arrest of the suspects, and the knife allegedly used in the commissioning of the crime was recovered, along with the victim’s cellphone.
