Scouts make radio contact

SANDTON – The annual jamboree took place and was attended by Cubs and Scouts from the Sandton District.

The annual Jamboree-on-the-Air and Jamboree-on-the-Internet (Jota-Joti) took place and was attended by the Cubs and Scouts of the Sandton District.

Jota-Joti is the largest Scouting event in the world with more that one million participants across 150 countries. It was started in 1958 and the idea is to encourage Cubs and Scouts to converse with each other via amateur radio and the internet to make new friends.

Marion Halstead of the 1st Parkmore Scout Group and one of the event organisers said, “The idea of learning about other related technologies was included to help the Cubs complete some of the requirements towards their projects interest badge.”

In addition, to learning about radio and technology, the Cubs also participated in a number of fun activities which included making a simple motor using a battery and magnet and using an electromagnet to lift a piece of metal.

The Sandton Amateur Radio Club provided the radio equipment and operators, and contact was made with about 40 different Jota stations, some as far as Newcastle, Durban and Mozambique.

Scouting is an outdoor-based educational programme which aims to equip young people with the skills and self-confidence to become future leaders in our communities. Membership is open to boys and girls.
