WATCH: Alleged hijacker beaten up by community

MARLBORO – An alleged attempted robbery turns ugly and is caught on camera.

Marlboro resident, France Gragul, was taking a leisurely Sunday afternoon walk home when he stumbled upon a crime scene.

“I was walking home at about 4pm yesterday [16 October] and I saw that a man was trying to steal a truck. The owner of the truck came out and shot the suspect in the shoulder,” said Gragul.

The resident added that the suspect was lying on the ground and paramedics were called to the scene. He was able to capture video footage of a portion of the incident which shows paramedics attending to the alleged truck thief.

Gragul’s story, however, does not correspond to the findings of the police.

Spokesperson for Bramley Police Station, Molefe Mogodi, relayed information on the incident based on other eyewitness accounts. He said four suspects had attempted to steal the truck.

Watch the video footage below:

“The driver of the truck was in the vehicle with two other men and they were all sitting in the front seats of the truck,” explained Mogodi.

“When the driver saw the four suspects leaning against a wall, he just felt that something was wrong and he revved the truck in the direction of the four suspects to scare them away because he felt that they were going to rob him.

“One of the suspects threw his gun at the truck’s windscreen to stop the driver from running him over.”

Mogodi added that three of the four suspects fled the scene and got away unharmed. However, the suspect who threw his gun at the truck was caught by community members who beat him up because they witnessed his alleged attempt at stealing the truck.

“Before the police were called to the scene, the three suspects who got away returned in a vehicle to save their partner,” said Mogodi. “However, this was not successful and they did not get their partner back. But the suspects did shoot the driver of the truck in the leg when they returned to the scene to save their friend.”

It is, therefore, unclear who the man in the video is because both the truck driver and the suspect needed medical attention as a result of their injuries. Mogodi said he was unable to confirm who the man in the video was.

The suspect who was shot appeared in court on 17 October, and the case was postponed to 24 October.
