Vodacom is most empowered company

JOHANNESBURG – Vodacom impresses at South Africa's Top 100 Most Empowered Companies awards ceremony.

 

Vodacom’s commitment to transformation was rewarded at South Africa’s Top 100 Most Empowered Companies awards ceremony hosted by Empowerdex.

The company, based in Midrand, was awarded the Most Empowered Company and Most Empowered Management Control under the 2007 Codes of Good Practice.

empowerment, from ownership to enterprise development.

Last year, Vodacom ranked 23rd in the Most Empowered Company category and this year the company clinched top spot.

Shameel Joosub, Vodacom Group CEO commented, “As a company with local roots, we are committed to delivering along the ideals of Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment and we fully internalised the transformation agenda. This achievement reflects our commitment to implementing meaningful and sustainable transformation for our employees, small, medium and micro enterprises, the people of South Africa and the economy as a whole.”

Vodacom is a Level 2 Black Economic Empowerment contributor and some of the company’s achievements include:

  • R7.2 billion spent on preferential procurement to 51 per cent black-owned suppliers.
  • R5 billion to 30 per cent black women-owned suppliers
  • R26 billion weighted spend on BEE status suppliers.
  • R841 million spent on developing SMME ICT businesses.
  • R218 million spent on uplifting communities and R112 million spent on skills development.

Vodacom continues to promote transformation in its South African operations. Black representation in the workforce is 73 per cent and 55 per cent at senior management level. Women represent 43 per cent of the workforce and 31 per cent at senior management level.

“The Most Empowered Management Control under the 2007 Codes of Good Practice award reflects the progress we have made in increasing the number of black women in senior and top management roles,” concluded Joosub.
