Help for local musos

JOBURG – Concerts SA wants every musician to realise their dreams.

Getting on the stage and letting the country hear musicians live is the best way to get local music to the people, and Concerts SA wants to help.

Concerts SA is an initiative which was started in conjunction with the Norway Embassy and Concerts Norway in 2013, by the South African Music Rights Organisation.

The aim of Concerts SA is to expand the local music industry by facilitating live music concerts across the country. “With the objective of creating and strengthening a vibrant and viable live music circuit in southern Africa, Concerts SA supports the live music sector using a multi-pronged approach,” said Concerts SA project manager, Nailla Dollie.

Now, after facilitating the live performances of hundreds of industry underdogs and leaders, the initiative is looking to help musicians out once more and is, therefore, calling for applications.

The initiative’s Music Mobility Fund tour funding mechanism offers opportunities for professional South African musicians to undertake live music tours, as well as performance-based workshops in South Africa as well as other Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries.

Following the success of the five previous rounds of funding, applications are now open for the second iteration of Music Mobility Fund disbursements this year.

Jazz vocalist and independent musician, Titi Luzipo, explained how the Music Mobility Fund impacted her career and allowed her to focus on her music rather than other things that come along with it. “My project, Songs my Mother Taught Me, has received nationwide recognition through the Mobility Fund. With Concerts SA’s help, I have toured four cities and have had 10 successful shows. The funds made it easier for me and some of my band members to travel and pay for our accommodation.

“Overall, the fund is undoubtedly one of the greatest platforms to kick-start your music on a wider scale. I urge all artists to apply for this amazing initiative.”

The fund aims to help cover a range of the costs usually taken on by the musicians such as transportation, visas, equipment and accommodation, among other things, but also the duty of creating a hype and providing exposure for the musicians.

Concerts SA would be the perfect team for unsigned budding artists and all are encouraged to apply.

The deadline for submissions is 2 October and tours can be expected to take place from late October to mid-April next year.
