Sowing seeds of knowledge

SANDTON – An event for decor and design enthusiasts was held in Sandton on 14 September.

Design enthusiasts, the general public, and the media were invited to the Home Channel Decor and Design event in Sandton on 14 September.

All aspects of the home, decor and the kitchen were explored by keynote speakers such as gardening guru, Tanya Visser. Using humour to get her message across, she shared valuable gardening advice with a rapt audience.

Plants need water to grow, therefore, water conservation was at the forefront of her presentation. “The Kudu, a majestic creature, can survive without much water… but we panic with one water restriction! Don’t panic because rain will come. We just need to change our habits and save water. Example, do not leave the tap running while you brush your teeth,” she said.

She added that mulching, whereby a layer of plant material is applied on top of the soil, is a gardening technique that is used to help keep the soil moist. “We need to save our water.”

As a result of the busy lives that many homeowners lead, Visser believes that seeds are often bought but never sewn. She explained that these seeds are sometimes packed away and forgotten about for several months or even years. “Remember that these old seeds may not germinate but give it a bash anyway.”

She also explained that many of the attendees had probably sown seeds before. However, she stressed that most were probably doing it wrong as the number of seeds used should be minimal. “To get the right amount of seeds, just tip the seed bag over slightly then tap twice. That is all the seeds you will need… Don’t sew these seeds too deep into the ground and these seeds need to be kept moist for the first 10 days in order for them to grow.”
