Creativity to represent a legacy

JOBURG – 466/64 is calling on students to be part of the change for society.

Brand Identity wants students to share in their celebration of the late Nelson Mandela.

The 466/64 fashion brand was conceived and born out of a dream by a team at Brand Identity, to celebrate the legacy of the beloved icon, Madiba.

“This dream came from a great need to acknowledge the sacrifices Mandela made for his country and the example he set for the rest of the world,” explained Blanche Veerapen, South African brands president of Brand Identity.

“The brand was also a vehicle to honour one of Madiba’s wishes for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital and Brand Identity has chosen to donate to the paediatric cardiology unit. We are committed to healing children’s hearts, just as Madiba was committed to healing the heart of our beloved country.”

The brand is now eagerly searching for students to get involved in accumulating funds and creativity as they take part in the 466/64 Student T-Shirt Art Project.

“As part of the ethical code of 466/64 Fashion, the brand develops selected projects that are in line with, and take forward, the legacy of Nelson Mandela. In line with this legacy, a wish of Nelson Mandela’s was to develop young talent,” Veerapen explained. The project allows for young local artists, as well as graphic design and fashion students to develop their talent and promote their creativity and to infuse new energy and creativity into the 466/64 Madiba Legacy Brand.

“With this project, 466/64 Fashion is truly in the hands of the youth of South Africa.”

Students will be judged on how well they depict what Mandela’s legacy means to them, their design, a 150-word synopsis of the concept of their design and a 150-word biography, which should all be submitted by 19 September.

Winners of the competition will win bursaries from the HCI Foundation – the corporate social investment arm of HCI, a black empowerment investment company which has its origins in the Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union – in addition to R10 000 sponsorship towards their future; and their designs being sold online and at the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to share Mandela’s legacy and pave your own path.
