A trust fund for Gugu Zulu’s daughter

A trust fund has been started to take care of Lelethu Zulu, the daughter of the late South African racing icon, Gugu Zulu.

This is thanks to Mercantile Bank which has set up The Mercantile Bank Foundation-Lelethu Naledi Zulu Trust with an initial amount of R40 000 to go towards Lelethu’s education.

The bank handed over the cheque to the Zulu family on 26 August at its offices.The bank’s chief executive officer, Karl Kumbier, together with non-executive board member, Thebe Ikalafeng also handed over a tribute flag designed by employees, to Gugu’s family. Kumbier took the flag with him when he summited Mount Elbrus in Russia, the highest mountain in Europe, on 4 August.

HEARTWARMING: Gugu Zulu’s father, Peter Zulu holds a flag designed by Mercantile Bank employees which is handed over by CEO of the bank, Karl Kumbier to Gugu’s mother, Puleng and wife, Letshego.

After handing over the flag, Ikalafeng said, “This gesture not only speaks for the values of the bank but the nature of South Africans as a whole. As the flag reached Mount Elbrus, we want to believe that we in a way, helped finish the journey for Gugu. The R40 000 contribution to the trust is not much but is a seed that we believe will grow and grow, because someone has to start.”

Kumbier added that Gugu was an incredible individual whose strength and heart symbolised the type of person we can all aspire to become.

The Zulu family thanked the bank and said, “Even though Gugu may not be with us in the flesh he is with us in spirit. We believe he is looking down at us and asking us to continue the journey, and that is exactly what we are going to do, we are going to continue his journey.”
