High tea pampering to commemorate 70 years in hospitality

SANDTON – Read to see how guests got the opportunity to enjoy a high tea pamper.

In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, guests were treated to a high tea.

Kevin Dharamaratne, restaurant manager and tea expert at InterContinental Sandton Towers quoted Henry James, author of The Portrait of a Lady, who once said, “There are a few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.”

The guests received the opportunity to taste a specific tea which has its roots in the Shang Dynasty in China, circa third century AD. The tea gradually made its way to western shores, as it was later popularised in Britain during the 17th century when the British introduced tea production and consumption to India.

“There is no denying the quintessential role tea plays in our lives – be it to lift your spirits or calm your soul. To celebrate this wonderful yet often overlooked luxury, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts uncovers the best tea experiences in the region,” Dharamaratne said.

“The intricate, classical accents balance the sleek, modern interior, creating an ideal, elegant setting to take part in the ceremonial ritual of tea.”

The guests also had a chance to pair the tea with delectable delicacies from the all-day snack menu and were able to enjoy an evening wind-down over cocktails.

Dharamaratne added that with an a la carte selection of teas, coffees and patisseries du jour, (translate) the guests enjoyed their tea with innovative creations crafted by pastry chefs, including chocolate tartlets, tarte aux pommes and gelato. (translate both)

“Set against a pleasing backdrop of live music, the guests soaked in the relaxing ambiance while taking in the late afternoon views of Sandton’s business district,” he said.

“A timeless ceremony that spans cultures worldwide, the allure of tea drinking lies in its very simplicity. With our hectic and occasionally overwhelming everyday lives, don’t we all deserve to steal an hour – or three – and pamper ourselves with the pleasure found in a good cup of tea?”
