Celebrating local entertainers

JOBURG – South African celebs are commended for their impressive international work.

We love our South African celebs and now we’re celebrating them for their international work.

From music to acting, presenting and beyond, South African celebs are taking their talent worldwide and showcasing what we have to offer on an international scale.

Check out just some of our favourite entertainers who are going big this year.

Pearl Thusi is one of the country’s favourite TV personalities with no chill, and no time to be nice to fellow industry leader, Bonang Matheba. What’s even more exciting than their feud is that Thusi has officially been signed to star in the second season of the US hit series, Quantico, alongside Bollywood-turned-Hollywood star, Priyanka Chopra – quite a feat, even after being chosen to host the African adaptation of Lip Sync Battle.

AKA is killing the game with his endless string of hit songs and now is even set to appear on the popular television series, Empire, after impressing world-famous actors, Taraji P Henson and Terrence Howard during their visit to South Africa in June.

Who can forget about AKA’s Queen B, Matheba, who has been working hard on becoming an international household name. It was just last year that she won Favourite South African Radio DJ at the Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards in Los Angeles and recently hosted a prime spot on the red carpet at the 2016 BET Awards, also in LA.

The queen of local television also awards bursaries to people in need of financial help to study – she’s sending people to school and what could be more admirable?

Black Coffee is not just a South African DJ, but a global icon. This year he’s earned two major achievements – after years garnering many other impressive accolades – by performing at one of the biggest music festivals in the world, Coachella. He was awarded the Best International Act – Africa at the 2016 BET Awards – the first South African ever to win in this category.

Does Trevor Noah still count as a local? Nevertheless, we all know about his long list of accolades, starting with his gig on The Daily Show and ending at… well never ending. Since taking up his permanent place in the US he has been a busy man.

We say big ups to all the celebs doing it big, globally, this year.
