Wits ranked as top university in SA

JOBURG – Wits University continues to climb the ladder of top universities in the world.

The University of Witwatersrand was ranked as the top tertiary institution in South Africa, according to a list released by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR).

The University of Cape Town (UCT) followed in second, with Stellenbosch University coming in third position.

With regards to world rankings, Wits placed in 176th position, while UCT placed in 265th position.

The CWUR list measures eight objectives and indicators when ranking the world’s top 1 000 universities.

The top two indicators include the following:

  • The quality of education, measured by the number of alumni and staff who have won international awards and hold executive positions.
  • The volume of publications, citations and international patents published by the institution.

Wits vice-chancellor and principal, Professor Adam Habib welcomed this achievement.

“The fact that a university is ranked tops does not mean it is the best in all fields and one needs to take these rankings with a measure of circumspection,” Habib said.
