Dancers set to wow in international competition

BRYANSTON - Local dancers are set to perform in New York for the annual American Dance Awards.

Members of the Dancers Dance Studio in Bryanston will compete at the American Dance Awards in New York from 10 to 16 July.

Owner of the established studio in Bryanston, Joanne Bobrow has been running the business and teaching dance lessons in the area for 26 years. Bobrow is extremely proud of her dancers and said that they have put in an incredible amount of hard work to get to this point of competing overseas.

“We entered the American Dance Awards South African Regional Championships last year in Pretoria during October and all 10 of our girls who entered qualified to represent South Africa in New York this year. One of our students, Olivia Davies, was selected to compete for the title of American Dance Awards Dancer of the Year in her age group. Only three students in each age group are selected to compete from each country, so we are so proud of her,” said Bobrow.

She added that the team travelling to America has become a family of sorts. “We have been training hard since March this year, and over the last two months, the girls have been training every day, and weekends from 10am to 7pm, nine hours a day. We have pushed them to the limit, and they have risen to the challenge. They have all bonded as a team, and have laughed and cried together.”

Georgia Stoller (16) is one of the dancers who will compete in New York and is grateful for the opportunity to represent her studio and country. ” I have been dancing since the age of two, so dancing has always played a big part in my life. We have put in a lot of hard work, and we have had some tears and setbacks, but I believe all the hard work will pay off.”

Stoller added that her team is really lucky to have teachers that instil passion, commitment and drive in their students.

They are going to come home with fantastic memories,” said Brammer.

The competition will be held at the Sheraton Hotel in Times Square in New York and will run from 10 to 16 July.
