Potjie party

SANDTON – Bryanston Sports Club hosted a fun and tasty potjie competition on 29 May.

The Bryanston Sports Club hosted a festive potjie competition on 29 May.

Members of the Bryanston, German, Rivonia and Boskruin tennis clubs whipped out their best potjie recipes to compete for the title of the one.

Dolf Buys of the Bryanston Sports Club who organised the event said, “Every year this competition gets bigger and better, and this year we had 22 teams competing. We also had an expert panel of judges. The first judge, Dine van Zyl is a potjie expert and wrote her first book on potjie in 1983. Another judge, Jason Greer is the ex-presenter of All Access, an entertainment television show, and is an avid foodie.

“The contestants were judged on numerous criteria. The judges looked at taste, originality, aroma, texture, colour, ingredients, work area, decor and many other factors. The winner of the best potjie was Chris van Alphen.”

This event was an opportunity for family and friends to come together. One of the contestants, Renier Bester attended the event with family and friends and said he had decided to make an ostrich potjie. He also had his potjie recipe printed on his T-shirt.

The contestants were exceptionally festive and dressed up in colourful outfits. It was a traditional potjie event that paid tribute to a historical, well-known South African dish.
