Abdullah Ibrahim and Hugh Masekela reunite on stage

JOBURG – Jazz Epistles, Abdullah Ibrahim and Hugh Masekela, are reuniting to celebrate the 40th year anniversary of the 16 June Soweto uprising.

For the first time in 60 years, two of South Africa’s iconic jazz instrumentalists and global jazz ambassadors, Abdullah Ibrahim and Hugh Masekela will reunite and perform on one stage.

The two were once part of The Jazz Epistles, one of South Africa’s earliest and most influential jazz bands. This was an all-black band of young men consisting of Ibrahim (then known as Dollar Brand) on piano, Masekela on trumpet, Jonas Gwangwa on trombone, Kippie Moeketsi on alto saxophone, bassist Johnny Gertze, and Makaya Ntshoko and Early Mabuza on drums.

The band was in full swing in the 60s and emerged as an anti-apartheid music group. They jammed into the late night on the streets of Sophiatown, and especially at the Jazz at the Odin Club.

Their music filled the dusty streets of the townships and fired the hearts of the youth who were determined to stand up for a South Africa that was free and fair.

For two nights on the 15 and 16 June, these legendary icons, Ibrahim and Masekela will each perform individual sets on stage and then collaborate in a much-anticipated never-been-experienced-before grand finale.
