Mo Flava walks the talk and brings the youth with him
JOBURG - Radio presenter and club DJ, Mo Flava helps young South Africans to pursue their dreams by awarding them with bursaries to study a media degree
Moeti Tsiki, affectionately known as Mo Flava, has constantly worked on his craft and believes it is this persistence that has kept him on top of his game for the past decade.
His focus and dedication also extend to the youth, with the radio presenter awarding students with bursaries over the past six years. Recently, Mo Flava awarded 12 students who displayed a keen interest in radio, TV, music production and graphic design, as well as other media studies-related degrees, with bursaries.
Mo Flava said that a lot of young people want to do what he does, but do not have the funding and opportunities to pursue their dreams. “I wish somebody could have said to me, here is a bursary, go study at Boston,” Mo Flava said.
“I thought I could do my bit to give young people an opportunity, at the very least, to study. We need to walk the talk, it is not easy telling young people that not all of you will get a job. But, at least, some will have an education.”
The Johannesburg-based radio fundi also said that if young people want to succeed in the media industry, there are no shortcuts and they would have to pay their dues. “You need to stay true to the core of what you do; if you are good at what you do, the fame will come,” explained Mo Flava.
“We need more youth radio stations, there aren’t enough; we need a national youth radio station. There is not enough competition within the industry, hence, people do not feel the need to give more than they do.”
