MOVIE REVIEW: 13 Hours – The secret soldiers of Benghazi

JOBURG – The film 13 Hours: The secret soldiers of Benghazi brings a distinctive human touch to the roles of six former soldiers.

The movie opens with the introduction of the six soldiers who have been assigned to protect operatives and diplomats in Benghazi, Libya.

As the movie progresses, on the second anniversary of the 9/11 United States terror attacks, the 11 September 2012, Islamic militants attack the United States Consulate in Benghazi.

The United States ambassador was killed in the attack. Meanwhile, stationed less than one mile away from the consulate are the former soldiers who decide to involve themselves in a fierce armed battle to save the lives of the remaining Americans.

Renowned movie director, Michael Bay, who’s famous for his action-packed productions, not only gives the audience six American killing machines, but he makes sure that the soldiers are depicted as people who have lives back home and families to take care of.

The director gives the audience context in the beginning of the movie, which turns out to be important as to how the story develops, and is essentially what makes the movie more stimulating to watch and to see it through to the end.

The never-ending firefight action is filled with blood and gore but is thrilling. More than that, the storyline is the rendition of true-life events. However, the film has been criticised for being bias and pro-American and that is evident in the movie.

It is a new school war drama that is going to do well at cinemas. It has all the makings of a good production – action, thriller, drama and romance.

The movie will be released at cinemas nationwide from 19 February.
