Bringing punk to Jozi

JOBURG - Pioneering the punk movement, Millicent Montsho, the pink-haired woman behind Punk Friday, is calling on Joburg residents to experience punk in and around the CBD.

Punk Friday, a concept which Montsho brought to life, allows punk musicians to showcase their music to new crowds around the city.

While the movement does not currently enjoy the luxury of having a confirmed venue or dates, there were a number of extremely successful shows held last year.

“Right now we’re just starting out and so it’s very experimental. We’re yet to find a set venue and sponsors for the event,” Montsho said.

Regardless of the nomadic nature of the event thus far, Montsho has managed to gather a number of punk performers from Soweto, Rosettenville, Johannesburg North and the CBD itself.

As with many things, punk comes in a number of different forms and sounds.

“We’ve done shows where they play all different kinds of punk. We do trash punk, a little bit of heavy metal and everything in between.”

Unfortunately for the enthusiastic event organiser, punk is not yet all that popular in Johannesburg, but it is for that reason that she’s made it her mission to put the genre and Punk Friday on the national events’ calendar.

Some of the City’s social venues have been supporting Montsho’s efforts to popularise the genre by allowing her to showcase her musical guests at venues including Ko’Spotong in Braamfontein, as well as Curiocity Backpackers and the skatepark in Maboneng.

Speaking about doing something new and attending an event of this sort, Montsho said, “Stepping out of your comfort zone and your box is allowed. Don’t die,” she concluded.

The event is held at various venues in Johannesburg and it takes place either on the first or last Friday of each month, so check out the Facebook page for details.
