Meet the men of MonArk

JOBURG - One of the most exciting acts to break into the music industry in 2013 was MonArk and now they're celebrating the success of their album Negatives (Deluxe Edition) with a tour.

The four members of MonArk are Eugene Coetzer, who is lead vocalist and plays percussion; Ewald Jansen van Rensburg, on guitar and synthesizer; Deon de Klerk, on bass guitar; and Graeme Wuth on drums.

City Buzz was lucky enough to interview two members of the band, Coetzer and De Klerk, at Universal Music studios in Rosebank, and find out a little more about their time in the limelight.

Before friendship turned them into a band, they lived on all sides of the country, but now hail from the bustling city of Johannesburg.

The men of the proudly South Africa band explained the inspiration behind the name of the band.

“We liked it because there was a cool superhero in the early 80s named Monark Starstalker, but we also like the idea of authority – like the monarchy,” explained De Klerk.

“I mean, in your life you have authority, and we’ve chosen to use our authority to do positive things for ourselves.”

The band, which has created a sensational career for them over two short years, explained that in their career right now they are really just having fun, but also pushing past their perceived limits.

“We’re always working,” explained Coetzer.

“If we want to put out an album next year we have to start writing now, so even though we’re doing live stuff now for our deluxe album, we’re also busy working on the new album.”

Since gaining fame from their debut single, Smiling, they have realised the importance of social media on their journey and interacting with their fans.

“We want people to buy the album, but I think that following us on social media comes first and buying the album comes second,” De Klerk explained.

“We want the fans to be able to interact and talk to us.”

Appreciative of their fans, the men of MonArk acknowledge that their journey may have been short-lived without the support of their fans. With that attitude, the humble band is sure to reach the stars.
