Explore Joburg

Last week the North Eastern Tribune and its sister publications announced a new partnership with the City of Johannesburg, in the name of tourism.

The project aims to uplift tourist hotspots within Joburg so that those visiting, as well as those who are lucky enough to call Joburg home, will enjoy an experience to remember.

When speaking to some Joburg residents, it is surprising to note that many do not see the area as a tourist destination – never mind a destination that is getting some great and positive international attention. The New York Times calls Johannesburg a ‘thrilling metropolis’ while Rough Guides voted Johannesburg as their top city to visit this year.

How exciting that Johannesburg is being put on the international map!

The likes of Maboneng, Braamfontein and Melville, to name but a few, have such exciting and unique aspects to them, but many Joburg residents do not explore these areas. Surprisingly, even the obvious touristy destinations, such as the Apartheid Museum are not on the list for many Joburg residents.

One has to wonder why we do not give our city the same recognition as international tourists do? Is it that we are so busy that there is no time? Or is it that we don’t take advantage of the wonders of Joburg simply because it is on our doorstep?

I always laugh when speaking to Durban residents, because so many of them live close to the sea, but never go. Maybe Joburg residents have the same mentality – or maybe we just don’t know what Joburg really has to offer.

I am going to make it my December mission to explore Joburg, as a tourist. From the likes of the  renowned jazz club, the Orbit, to 44 on Stanley, Melville Koppies and beyond.

I want to fall in love with what Joburg has to offer and I beg you and your families to do the same – if you have not done so already.

It’s time to fall in love with Joburg … the rest of the world has.
