Unplugged at the Sheds

JOBURG - Castle Milk Stout has been running a competition to find the best unsigned singer in South Africa, and now the contestants have been whittled down to the final six.

Castle, one of South Africa’s favourite locally produced beers, was again looking to find someone new to introduce to the music scene in South Africa – they were looking for a person with a voice like no other, to whom they could give a great opportunity and R20 000 in cash at the Sheds in Maboneng on 25 November.

The Castle Milk Stout Unplugged talent search began on 10 May, where contestants were encouraged to showcase their original music to a panel of judges. Since then, there were a number of rounds to sift out the most talented singers in the group – six of whom were chosen by a panel of SAB judges, as well as the fans who could listen to each round on the Castle Milk Stout Unplugged radio show on Sundays.

Now, Asanda Nqiki and Sizwe Yaze from Port Elizabeth, Amohelang Mohlotsane and Tumelo Moloto from Johannesburg, Afikile Dlakavu from East London and Phumla Sibanyoni from Daveyton are the finalists who are being mentored by South African band, The Muffinz, until the finals.

The finalists will compete at three exclusive concerts on the Castle Milk Stout Unplugged tour in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban alongside The Muffinz and DJ Kenzhero, seeking to be named as the best talent in the genre of soul and RnB.

The winning artist receives R20 000 in cash plus a contract with Universal Music where their best track will be recorded, polished and promoted for six months.

Last year it was Itu Tshabane, a vocalist from Pretoria, who beat almost 2 000 other entrants to claim the title, and this year the battle for glory has been even more fierce with more than 2 500 entries.

“Castle Milk Stout has long been a supporter of unplugged music, and we are really excited with the amount of talent that has come forward in this, the second year of the Unplugged competition,” said Castle Milk Stout general manager, Julian Remba.

Catch the unplugged music at the Sheds at 1 Fox Street, in Maboneng on 25 November.
