The Mashlab experience unites musos

JOBURG - The Xperia Mashlab and 5FM have brought the radio listeners of South Africa something awesome for Rocktober.

Mashlab was initiated in 2013 on 5FM and is a platform where listeners can vote in their favourite artists to collaborate and create something exciting and new on a weekly basis.

Since then, Sony has joined in on the fun and sponsors what is now called Xperia Mashlab.

The collaboration for October was Arno Carstens of Springbok Nude Girls, Andre Kriel of Black Cat Bones, Jade Neebe of Jack Parow, Franco Schoeman of ISO and Xperia Mashlab fan Austen Ramsay Lewis who were called together to create a temporary band called The Wildcards.

The Wildcards explained that coming from different backgrounds, they have different influences that steered the direction and created the sound of their music. Not forgetting that each individual also draws from the creative process that they go through within their respective bands.

With no real direction when entering the studio to create what would turn out to be a rock ‘n roll track, they set off on a musical journey that led them through many genres including funk and blues. In the end they turned out their rocking track for Rocktober, called Black Sheep.

As individuals, the musicians divulged to City Buzz the names of the artists they would one day like to share the stage with.

Schoeman would love to play a concert with The White Stripes and Kriel said, “Any of the old school founders of the blues, sitting on a porch on a cotton farm with guys like Robert Johnson or Muddy Waters, tapping their feet and making some beats.”

Jack Parow’s drummer, Neebe, said she would love to perform with the Rolling Stones while Ramsay said he would have loved to share a stage with Albert Einstein or William Shakespeare.

While they have no plans to reunite and make more music together in the near future, fans need not worry because there will be loads of new mash-ups to enjoy.
