Everest: A terrifying climb from the comfort of your seat

JOBURG – Why would anyone put their lives in danger in an attempt to conquer one of the riskiest pursuits in the world just to accomplish the near-impossible? This is the question director Baltasar Kormákur attempts to answer in the movie, Everest.

Even though the answer is not quite satisfactory, the film tries to make the feat a noble one. However, it seems as if most of the people climbing Mount Everest in the film secretly have a death wish. This leaves audiences feeling a little angry at why they should be expected to feel bad for the climbers when it seems that they don’t want to survive.

It is still unclear why anyone would want to endure some of the worst conditions on earth and expect to live.

During the adventure, the climbers are faced with some of the harshest conditions conceivable for any human being. Things get even worse when a fierce storm strikes the mountain towards the end of the adventure, and the climbers are faced with an enormous fight to survive against what seems to be impossible odds.

In the film, the climbers go through the most violent blizzards, blistering winds and freezing temperatures that audiences can almost feel from the comfort of their seats, thanks to the three-dimensional visual effects.

This movie has a star-studded cast that includes Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, Keira Knightley, Jake Gyllenhaal and others.

It is a well-made cinematic piece and is expected to do well on circuit and at award ceremonies. The majestic thriller-drama tells a great story and honours the memory of the actual group of individuals that summited Mount Everest in 1996.

This is a great movie to watch for grandiose visuals and also if you would like to see how Kormákur tells the story in his special way. It is interesting to see what drives human beings to go out of their way to play a game of Russian roulette with their lives.

Everest will be released in South African cinemas nationwide on 18 September.
