Art book launch: Graffiti South Africa (28 February and 1 March)
This must-have art book detailing the history of the South African graffiti scene launches at Braamfontein’s Kalashnikov Gallery with a whole weekend graffiti extravaganza. This is inclusive of an exhibition, live graffiti and a tour of Braamfontein by local street art experts Past Experiences. Tour on 28 February at 10am and reservations required.

Brokeback Jozi (Showing until 4 March)
Graphic works by street artist and illustrator Natalie Propa inspired by the people of Johannesburg and their gift for survival showing at Mzansi Gallery in Melville.

Sophiatown jazz encounters (27 February)
Enjoy a picnic in the garden at 6pm before this month’s edition of the monthly jazz event in the old Sophiatown neighbourhood led by local jazz trio Ziza M. Begins at 8pm.
Goethe Institut 20th anniversary party (27 February)
The Goethe-Institut celebrates 20 years of working in South Africa with a free house music party with the likes of João Orecchia, German-Chilean DJ and producer Matias Aguayo, Miz Buttons and Mma Tseleng providing the tunes. The event will begin at 7.30pm.
The BLK brother (28 February)
The cult Joburg band The Brother Moves On are joining forces with the inimitable BLK JKS for a once-off musical collaboration titled The BLK Brother at downtown Joburg’s newest concert space, Cafe Monchhichi.
Jason Mraz (27 February)
American folk-pop singer, most famous for his smash hit record I’m Yours, plays at Montecasino.
Jazz at JAG (1 March)
The 2014 Standard Bank Young Jazz Musician of the Year, Nduduzo Makhathini headlines this special jazz event at the 100-year-old Johannesburg Art Gallery from 4pm.
Young Fathers (27 February)
The Mercury Prize winning alt-rap trio from Glasgow are in South Africa as part of the British Council’s SA-UK Seasons project and are supported by a host of local rap acts including Okamalumkoolkat, at King Kong, Troyeville.
FILM
Shield and spear at the Bioscope (Showing until 5 March)
This documentary film by Petter Ringbom looks at the controversy surrounding Brett Murray’s 2012 exhibition which featured a provocative caricature of the South African President, Jacob Zuma. The film premiere on 26 February is followed by a free concert by The Brother Moves On at the Curiocity Backpackers in Maboneng.
ON STAGE
Mpho popps – Exhibit A (28 February)
The young comic, who made a star turn in the nationwide stand-up show Mass Hysteria, returns to the Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City stage with his much awaited one-man comedy show Exhibit A, full of witty social commentary, high-energy impersonations and hilariously personal accounts of being a born-free South African.
Blacks only comedy show (28 February)
The popular stand-up comedy night is back at Emperor’s Palace with David Kau starring as MC and acts such as Kagiso Lediga, Tats Nkonzo, Tol Ass Mo, and Loyiso Madinga on the bill.
Under the baobab tree (Showing until 6 March)
The National Children’s Theatre will host a charming selection of stories and songs, including music by Johnny Clegg, Miriam Makeba and Mango Groove. The show aims to remind children of the beauty and wonder of South Africa’s unique culture and heritage.
Elvis the show (Showing until 8 March)
Showing at the Joburg Theatre is a greatest hits tribute to Elvis as sung by Las Vegas performer Nathan Belt, complete with wild costumes, quiffs, lots of hip swinging and a full live band.
Double bass (Showing at 14 March)
A humorous and poignant monologue filled with anecdotes and music from a beer-drinking bass player who reflects on his life and trade as a state orchestra musician at Sandton’s Auto & General Theatre on the Square.
Dance umbrella (Running until 16 March)
Outstanding contemporary dance from some of the world’s best performers. This year the festival showing at various venues across the city is particularly focused on the work of young women choreographers, and in addition to the blockbuster main festival there are also various fringe festival programmes.
Alan committie in the sound of laughter (Showing until 15 March)
The South African comic actor and stand-up comedian’s latest show is a witty take on current events mixed with outrageous character comedy.It is showing at the Pieter Toerien Theatre at Montecasino.
Andre the hilarious hypnotist (Showing until 15 March)
An evening of good old-fashioned family fun from South Africa’s most famous stage hypnotist at the Pieter Toerien Theatre in Montecasino.
