Still Alice: Watching life slip away

JOBURG - Imagine being an academic, highly acclaimed for your intellect when early-onset Alzheimer's disease suddenly takes that away and you struggle to remember your own daughter’s name.

Still Alice is a simple story that chronicles the life of Doctor Alice Howland after she receives her diagnosis. The role of Alice is played by Julianne Moore, who believably depicts how Alice changes from being a linguistic professor to struggling to remember how to spell the word water.

Her family watch her life and the person she once was slip away day by day, but they hang on to the memory of who she was and try to remind her of the woman she was before the disease.

In the film, Moore stars alongside Alec Baldwin, Kristen Stewart, Kate Bosworth and Hunter Parrish. Even though the other actors fail to add weight to the movie, Moore carries the movie to the end and delivers a heartfelt performance which adds remarkable depth to the personal story of Alice.

The film tends to be a little too long and the plot drags on while the film has very little memorable dialogue. However, the movie gives audiences a humane glimpse of what someone with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease has to deal with.
