SA house music reaches boiling point

JOBURG - House music fans will be given the opportunity to win tickets to one of the biggest one-night-only house music performances on 5 March.

Ballantine’s Scotch Whisky and Boiler Room will present, Stay True South Africa – a one-night-only house music experience in Johannesburg featuring global and local legends Black Coffee, Okmalumkoolkat, Culoe de Song, Shimza and Black Motion.

Launched early last year with its first event in Mexico, this partnership saw the creation of the Boiler Room & Ballantine’s Stay True Journeys, which explores and celebrates the stories of the world’s most vibrant music scenes.

Boiler Room lands on South African soil at a time when the country’s house music revolution and evolution is in the global spotlight. Pioneering producers, artists and DJ’s are touring the world taking the country’s sound to eager international ears.

“We always thought that house was big internationally, because that’s where we got it from,” said Black Coffee. “But I’ve realised that we have the biggest house scene in the world in South Africa.”

Culoe De Song added, “There is a lot of energy, a lot of hunger, a lot of kids getting into house music. It’s our time now and it’s exciting.”

Stay True South Africa will culminate in the production of an online documentary, shot on location in Johannesburg that will take the country – and the world – on a journey through South Africa’s house music, featuring global and local musicians exploring the stories and the people that create South Africa’s unique music culture.

Tickets are not for sale and fans can stand the chance to win tickets exclusively through Ballantine’s SA and Boiler Room channels.

From 2 February, Ballantine’s SA Facebook fans are invited to be a part of telling South Africa’s own house music story to stand a chance to win tickets to the event.

Daryl Dixon, Ballantine’s SA brand manager said, “Ballantine’s is about authenticity, self-belief, staying true to yourself and leaving an impression. This fits perfectly with Boiler Room’s ethos of uncovering and showcasing genuine talent from a diverse range of music genres around the world – and now here at home too.”
