Vote for local band to open the city

JOBURG - The race for the band that will open the Vodacom In The City festival is on!

For two weeks, local rock and indie bands have submitted entries in the hopes of being selected as one of the finalists in the Vodacom Open The City competition.

After an intense judging session, this year’s panel whittled down the entries to four finalists: Capetonian electro rappers P.H. Fat, melodic electronica duo The Kiffness, quirky retro rockers The Plastics, and bluesy gypsy folk-rockers Bye Beneco.

It is now up to music fans to decide which of these four bands will be named the Open The City winner and share the stage with international headliners MGMT, Rudimental, Crystal Fighters, and The Presets at Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown, on 3 October.

“This year’s judging panel included Rowen Gangulu of Vodacom, Blaise Janichon of Seed Experiences, Sotiris Moldovanos of 5FM, and Diane Coetzer, a renowned music journalist, who had a tough time choosing the finalists from the impressive list of entries received,” said festival spokesperson Natasha Goosen.

“Those who vote before the end of August will stand the chance to see the finalists compete in an exclusive event on 5 September at the Open The City Session gig at Town Hall, Newtown.”

Guests who have their photos taken in one of the Vodacom booths at the Open The City Session could win the chance to be on the exclusive Vodacom VIP Deck at the 3 October inner-city concert.

Voting will close at midnight on 12 September, and the winning band will be announced on 17 September.
