Get ready to hit a Spike in the road

JOBURG - Straight off Broadway, get ready to explore the human condition.

From 12 July to 10 August, the South African cast of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is bringing Broadway’s Tony Award-winning Best Play of 2013 to the Montecasino theatre complex, as Pieter Toerien presents the South African premiere of this raucous and surprisingly poignant smash hit play.

The play by Christopher Durang is directed by Bobby Heaney for the production in South Africa.

To sum up the play, it’s about three siblings, and one hot mess.

Vanya and his sister Sonia live a quiet life in the Pennsylvania farmhouse where they grew up. But their sister Masha ran away many years ago and became a famous movie star. When Masha returns unannounced with her twenty-something toy boy, Spike, their prophesising housekeeper Cassandra correctly predicts an

unforgettable weekend of rivalry, regret and generally hilarious adventure.

By the end of their impromptu family reunion, this lovable bunch won’t ever be the same.

The original Broadway production of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike starred Sigourney Weaver (Masha) and David Hyde-Pierce (Vanya) and swept all the awards in the 2013 season.

Playing on some of Chekov’s time-tested themes, Christopher Durang proves in this hysterically funny romp that whether you are in 19th century Russia or 21st century Pennsylvania, the human condition never changes.
