MGMT heading to town

JOBURG - After nearly a decade of producing hit records, world tours and headline festivals around the globe, MGMT is finally heading to South Africa.

The psychedelic synth-pop duo will headline at the Vodacom in the City festival to be held at Newtown’s Mary Fitzgerald Square in October.

Fans can look forward to hearing hits like Kids, Electric Feel, and Time to Pretend at the event, which will also include performances by Rudimental and Crystal Fighters.

Event promoter Natasha Goosen said the festival will transform the square into a “pulsating spectacle of lights, lasers and an incredible blend of Jozi’s cosmopolitan music lovers”.

MGMT was formed in 2001 by Americans Ben Goldwasser and Andrew van Wyngarden.

Their 2008 release, Oracular Spectacular, snowballed their reputation on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

“Not only were they nominated for a Grammy Award, but the UK’s leading music magazine dubbed them the ‘best NY band about’,” said Goosen, adding that Oracular Spectacular was consistently ranked among the most celebrated pop albums of this century.

The duo’s second album, Congratulations, was released in 2010.

Their latest offering is the self-titled MGMT.

The Vodacom in the City festival will take place on 3 October at Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown.
