Get ready for the Foo Fighters

JOBURG - Formed as a one-man project by Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, the Foo Fighters quickly became one of America's legendary rock bands – and they're heading to South Africa.

Big Concerts announced that the Foo Fighters will perform two shows in South Africa in December; one in Johannesburg and one in Cape Town.

Grohl started the project following the death of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain and the dissolution of the band in 1994.

The drummer roped in bassist Nate Mendel, guitarist Pat Smear and drummer William Goldsmith prior the release of the Foo Fighters’ 1995 self-titled debut album.

Goldsmith and Smear were later replaced by Taylor Hawkins and Franz Stahl.

Guitarist Chris Shiflett joined the band after Stahl was fired.

The band has released seven albums, including 1997’s The Color and the Shape, 2002’s One by One, 2005’s In Your Honour, 2007’s Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, and 2011’s Wasting Light.

The Foo Fighters have sold a combined 11.1 million album copies.

Their eighth studio album is due for release in November.

The band will be joined by guest acts Kaiser Chiefs and BLK JKS.

The Foo Fighters will rock Joburg’s FNB Stadium on 13 December after their 10 December show at the Cape Town Stadium.

Tickets will go on sale on 26 June.
