Knowledge is power and can be the difference between finishing a project on time and on budget, or not at all. We asked Prominent Paints for their advice on dealing with peeling paint, particularly in a bathroom.
As a room where surfaces are exposed to constant moisture and humidity, peeling and bubbling paint in a bathroom is a common problem. Insufficient ventilation to rid a bathroom of excess humidity causes a situation where fungal growth is provided with the perfect environment, and peeling paint on ceiling and walls will soon follow.
YOU WILL NEED:
Drop cloths
120- and 180-grit sandpaper
1L of ProGold Fungal Wash
Large sponge to apply the fungal wash
Nylon scrubbing brushes and cloths
Interior crack filler
Prominent Plaster Primer
Acrylic sealant and caulking gun
Masking tape
Choice of Prominent acrylic or non-drip enamel paint
TOOLS:
Paint scraper
Stepladder
Buckets
Paintbrushes and paint roller
Rubber gloves and protective eyewear
HERE’S HOW:
• Correct the airflow of the bathroom by installing a built-in extractor fan.
• If fungal growth is visible on the walls or ceiling, remove all the loose and flaking paint from the surface.
• Treat with Prominent ProGold Fungal Wash and allow reaction on the surface for 3 hours before rinsing with clean water.
• Use interior crack filler to fill cracks and allow filler to dry. Sand smooth before applying plaster primer.
• Seal the gaps between the newly primed cornices and the walls with paintable acrylic sealant.
• Finish the walls and ceiling with your choice of Prominent Ultra Matt,Sheen or Prominent Non Drip Enamel. Note that only water-based paints can be applied to polystyrene cornices.
