When renovating an older home or wanting to incorporate modern style to a dated home, installing new skirting boards is an affordable way to add architectural detail without too much fuss.

In some cases will need to remove and replace skirting boards when installing tiles, laminate flooring or carpets.

There are a wide variety of skirting design styles, in a selection of materials ranging from pine to PVC, and you will find these at select hardware stores or moulding suppliers.

HERE’S HOW:

1. In most instances, skirting boards are simply nailed to the wall, and removing these is reasonably easy with a hammer and chisel. If you find it difficult to get a chisel behind the skirting board, use a large flat-head screwdriver to start off the process and pull back the skirtings to allow you to insert the chisel head. If you leave any nails behind, these need to be removed before you can install new skirting boards.

2. Use a pair of pliers to twist the nails until they are loose enough to pull out.

3. A compound mitre saw or manual mitre saw makes cutting corners for skirting boards much easier. If you don’t have one, you can hire one for day at most hire stores. A compound mitre saw allows you to cut 45-degree left and right angles, and you will need to do this if your skirting boards go round a corner in a room.

4. Modern high-tack adhesives allow you to apply new skirting boards without using a hammer and nails. Run a thick bead of adhesive along the back of the skirting board and press this firmly into place against the wall.

GOOD TO KNOW

When attaching a skirting board to the wall, angle slightly outwards so that the base touches the wall first and then press the rest of the board down. Immediately wipe away any excess adhesive that oozes out.
