JOBURG - Celebrate South Africa's 20 years of democracy in style with our selection of some of the festivities planned for this weekend.

From concerts to walks, there’s bound to be something to suit everyone’s tastes.

The musical celebration Anthems of Democracy features the talents of storyteller Gcina Mhlope and artists Bright Blue, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Vicky Sampson, Jennifer Ferguson, Sipho Hotstix Mabuse, the Soweto Gospel Choir and British music legend Joan Armatrading.

Anthems of Democracy is on at Braamfontein’s Joburg Theatre until 27 April.

On 26 April, join thousands of Joburgers in celebrating 20 years of democracy and human rights with a 5km walk around Constitution Hill and the surrounding area.

The family-friendly day out will feature live performances, children’s entertainment and education activities on human rights.

No pets or political campaigning will be allowed.

The walk will begin at 8am, and participants need to register online to take part in the walk.

Comrades legend Bruce Fordyce will launch Lonehill Parkrun at Lonehill Park dam at 8am.

The free, weekly, timed 5km course is for all runners and walkers.

Participants must pre-register on the Parkrun website to get their unique barcode which will be scanned at the end of the run to record their times every week online.

Also on 26 April, soccer fans can look forward to Orlando Pirates battling it out against Platinum Stars at Soweto’s Orlando Stadium.

Kick-off is scheduled for 3pm.

An SAB League match will see Alexandra’s FC Godisanang take on Eldorado Park outfit, Manats FC at Alexandra’s Three Square Grounds at 3pm.

On 27 April, the Montecasino Bird Gardens in Fourways will celebrate its 13th birthday.

The celebrations between 10am and 4pm will include face painters, stilt walkers, mime artists, jumping castles, the magical Flight of Fancy bird show, and visits from resident mascot, Tango the Toucan.

Orlando Pirates will play their last catch-up match against Bidvest Wits at the Bidvest Stadium at the University of the Witwatersrand campus, Braamfontein, at 7.30pm.

In Alexandra, catch more sporting action in the form of a Sasol Women’s Football League match that will see Alexandra’s Bluebirds pitted against Thembisa’s Palace Super Falcons at the Altrek Stadium.

Kick off is scheduled for 1pm.
