A journey with three women

JOBURG - The moving story of three village women will be played out on stage at the Windybrow Theatre.

For a moment in time, the Hillbrow theatre will become the village of Ntunta, near the Swaziland border, during an era of political and socio-economic struggle.

In the play In the Heart, Glenda and her husband Makhuhleni own a shop in Ntunta and a construction business in Nelspruit.

Their unfulfilling marriage is tainted by infidelity and secrets, and their shop has become a provider of one-way tickets for a short-lived “good life” in Nelspruit to ambitious young women.

“Everyone in the village is looking for the big break to get out of poverty and start a good life in Nelspruit,” said the theatre’s Zodwa Shongwe.

After Glenda’s assistant Lisbet moves to Nelspruit and begins an affair with Makhuhleni, things sour between the pair and she returns to the village for a second chance at the shop.

The third character, Angel, has a promising life, but must face the tribulations that can come with family life.

According to Shongwe, Angel alone represents “purity, sanity and hope in the midst of the evil, chaotic life” of the village.

The women will be played by Pertunia Maphanga, Tsepang Mkwane and Keitumetse Mncwabe.

The play was written and directed by Mncedisi Shabangu.

The award-winning actor played a role in drama series The Lab, and mentored community theatre groups, actors and directors for 17 years.

Shabangu has worked with acclaimed directors such as Lara Foot, James Ngcobo and William Kentridge.

In the Heart will run at the Windybrow Theatre, corner of Nugget and Pieterson streets, Hillbrow, from 13 until 23 February.
