Sports club needs long-term lease to stay open

Wendywood Sports Club is a place for children to come after school, where activities such as squash, ballet and tennis are available.

The tennis front is run by coach Allon Rock, with the intention of bringing the community to life through fitness and sport.

A natural player since the age of eight, Rock went on to open up membership in 2000, when he was recruited by Wendywood Sports Club and introduced tennis championships at the club. With previous loyalty to Eskom Megawatt Park Sunninghill, Rock arrived at the club with existing students to begin training.

At the end of 2008 the club’s lease expired – a jolting a setback to his coaching career.

“The City of Joburg became difficult to deal with when complications arose in the old lease. Not signed and unprepared, the details of the lease were invalid,” said Rock.

Rock was asked to close the club and responded by writing a letter to the City, attaching a petition from the community to stay open. “The club is about servicing the community,” added Rock.

In the middle of 2011, The Department of Sports and Recreation offered their assistance. Sustained by their help through payment of rates and electricity, The Wendywood Sports Club managed to welcome new members to the tennis courts. The City of Johannesburg went on to provide a short-term lease, and applications are being considered for the security of a long-term lease.

Rock’s goal for the sports club is to get sponsorship and corporate backing to ensure the future of tennis and the introduction of sport to children.
