According to Jennie Dallas, this year Theo teamed up with Tyde Malherbe from the Eastern Cape to race in the K2 (double kayak) event.

“The duo completed the challenging marathon course in an impressive time of 1 hour and 38 minutes,” said Dallas.

She added their performance in Croatia was the result of years of training and preparation, starting with local provincial selections, moving to national trials, and culminating in representing their country on the global stage.

“The ICF World Marathon Championships gather the best paddlers from around the world, testing their skills not only in long-distance racing but also in portaging – the critical skill of lifting the kayak out of the water and running a short distance before resuming paddling.”

Dallas highlighted that Theo’s success in this demanding discipline highlighted his agility, strength, and strategic thinking.

“As he finishes his matric year, Theo’s achievements in canoeing reflect his passion for the sport and set an inspiring example for future South African athletes.”

Theo said, “It was hard but lekker.”
