Brescia House School learner shines at SSA Level 2 Regional Gala

Demonstrating unparalleled prowess, a 16-year-old from Brescia House School emerged as a star at the SSA Level 2 regional gala, securing top positions in multiple races.

In a display of sheer talent and dedication, a 16-year-old learner from Brescia House School delivered a stunning performance at the recent SSA Level 2 Regional Gala.

The SSA Level 2 Regional Gala is Swimming South Africa’s (SSA) entry level to competitive swimming and is the first level of swimming recognised by the national swimming body.

This promising young swimmer, Jaiden Funnell, made waves, capturing the attention of spectators and fellow competitors alike.

Competing against some of the best young swimmers in the region, the Brescia House learner showcased remarkable skill and determination. Her impressive performances in multiple events not only earned her several medals but also set new personal bests.

“Not only did I achieve a gold, a silver, and two bronze medals, but I also obtained personal best times and finals for each of my events.”

She added that a month before the event, she and her teammates started tapering training and preparing for race performance.

“Tapering refers to the gradual reduction in training volume and intensity, particularly swimming mileage, two to four weeks before event day. I was determined to do well and beat my times from the previous Central Gauteng Aquatics (CGA) galas.”

Jaiden explained that she achieved her goals by getting first place in the 50m backstroke during prelims and finals and then achieving finals and personal best times for every event added more to her confidence in the sport.

“My gala’s highlight was experiencing the team coming together, supporting each other, and making great friendships.”

She pointed out that the victories have reignited her passion and confidence in swimming.

“This was my first CGA season in four years, and setting personal goals and achieving them is an amazing feeling. I look forward to continually setting goals and growing within the sport.”

She concluded by stating that the goal is to continue achieving personal best times and moving up a level through hard work and dedication.
