Sunday Funday hockey Derby at MCC
Not wanting to miss out on the opportunity to play hockey, MCC hockey players host Funday Derby for their community.
The Morningside Country Club (MCC) loves hockey as a community and celebrates opportunities to meet, network and socialise as a hockey fraternity.
This was the main motivating factor which inspired club member and hockey player Rachel Smith to arrange a Hockey Sunday Funday Hockey Derby event at the club on May 5.
“We have the astro, we’ve got the music and the bar, and the community,” said Smith. “We arranged for this week to just get together and play; it’s a great way for our players’ families to meet each other, and get to know other teammates and for us to test our skills out against ourselves.”
Smith laughingly spoke about some of the club’s hockey players having a fear of missing out on the opportunity to play hockey over that weekend, as they hadn’t had any league games scheduled for that day.
A healthy gathering of spectators gathered to watch the games, as MCC hockey players vied for friendly points on the scoreboard. Even young children were kept entertained at the recreational corner with a jumping castle, and desks set up for recreational artistic expression.
Chairman of hockey at Morningside Country Club Andrew Duff emphasised the importance of creating spaces for community members to get to know one another over casual bonding experiences.
“Days like this are inherent to what we’re building as a club, and as a culture within this community,” said Duff. “There’s something for everybody, and we always want to introduce more people to the lovely game of hockey.”
MCC manager Steve Smit added that events such as the hockey derby were great for attracting members to join the club.
“Today’s just a get-together for everyone, and a way to build club spirit,” Smit said. “Everyone brings their friends along, and hopefully we attract more members through that.”
