A group of South African friends who used to live in Barcelona fell in love with the game of padel and decided to launch the sport in this country.

Padel is a racket sport typically played in doubles on an enclosed court slightly smaller than a doubles tennis court.

A co-founder of Club Padel Mike Earp said they launched the sport at Morningside Country Club on 4 March.

He highlights that the beginning of Club Padel started one day after the game when he and his friends got together and thought that padel sport would make a great hit in South Africa.

“After a few years, we started working on the concepts and elements for the Club Padel; as of today, we are launching it here; we have two others, one in Stellenbosch and the other in the Pirates Club in Joburg.”

Earp elaborates that padel is widely renowned as one of the fastest-growing sports in the world and that it is accessible and social.

“As padel is a social sport, it is lovely to see different generations, young and old, playing and engaging together.”

He states that people can join Club Padel via the downloadable application called ‘Playtomic Aand pp,” then register online and book courts.

People are encouraged to note that current costs are R100 per hour per player at most local sites; a sleeve of 3 balls is about R130; racket hire is usually R50; and MCC members will receive a 50% discount at off-peak times during the weekdays (09:00 to 15:00).
